Um dos componentes desse processo, o ftalato, aditivo usado para dar plasticidade à tinta, se não for corretamente tratado, é altamente poluente. Os empresários de indústrias estão temerosos se a produção - cujo consumo cresce a taxas de 20% ao ano - está ajudando a reduzir impactos ambientais ou se é apenas uma ferramenta para atrair consumidores.
De acordo com ABTCP (Associação Brasileira Técnica de Celulose e Papel), a vida útil do papel dura de quatro a sete reciclagens. E, a cada nova reciclagem, o papel perde qualidade e ganha novas funções. No seu primeiro estágio (papel virgem), ele pode, por exemplo, ser sulfite. Depois, reciclado, pode até voltar a sê-lo mas, para isso, precisa receber certa quantidade de papel virgem. Na reciclagem seguinte, pode se tornar embalagem de mercadorias. Em outra reciclagem, já se torna caixa de papelão. E, no último estágio, vira “miolo” de caixa de papelão.
Para Antonio Gimenez, gerente de Negócios de Impressão da International Paper, é um mito dizer que o papel reciclado salva árvores.”Não há evidências que comprovem, com segurança, que o papel reciclado traga menos impactos para o meio ambiente do que o papel branco”, afirma. Um estudo realizado pela Esalq-USP mostra que a produção de papel 100% reciclado para imprimir e escrever pode gerar um volume de efluentes até seis vezes maior que o papel branco.
